Queen Elizabeth II visits the UN Global Compact Slovenia conference on sustainable development

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh, visited the conference titled "Sustainable Development for National Competitiveness" organized by the United Nations Global Compact Slovenia in cooperation with IEDC-Bled School of Management and UK Trade & Investment. The Queen was welcomed by the President of the UN Global Compact Slovenia and President of IEDC-Bled School of Bled, Prof. Danica Purg.
The conference was an opportunity for Slovene business executives to meet with the respective guests. UK Secretary of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs, Mr. David Miliband, delivered a speech to participants on the importance that the UK attaches to the Initiative.
The conference featured best practices from Slovenian and UK companies in the area of sustainable development for competitive advantage and provided an opportunity for dialogue and deliberation. The conference aim was to bring the concept of sustainable business to higher awareness among business community and general public, while, at the same time, ignite dialogue and innovation that allow for truly national effort in the area of sustainable development. Janez Škrabec, Riko Group, Tatjana Fink, Trimo Trebnje, Jon Pender, GlaxoSmithKline, and Žiga Debeljak, Mercator Group, presented best practices and solutions for sustainable operations for businesses and societal benefit. Dr. Nadya Zhexembayeva, UNGC Slovenia Vice-President and assistant professor of sustainable development at IEDC, facilitated a dialogue between business, non-profit, and public sector representatives on the future of sustainability in Slovenia.
The Slovenian chapter of the UN Global Compact was established on 24 May 2007 on the initiative of Prof. Danica Purg, President of IEDC-Bled School of Management. Originally founded by 16 companies, which represent the biggest drivers of Slovene economy, UN Global Compact Slovenia now has 40 members. Prof. Danica Purg serves as a President of UN Global Compact Slovenia, and IEDC provides secretariat and organizational support for the association.
The central goal of the UN Global Compact Slovenia is to help Slovenian companies realize strategic opportunities offered by sustainable and socially responsible practices, increasing, therefore, the overall competitiveness of Slovenian economy. To realize this goal, the association cooperates with other Slovenian NGO's, organizes regular meetings, roundtables, conferences and individual meetings related to issues of environment, labour, human rights, and anti-corruption, while it also offering consulting in the field of sustainable development.
